Wednesday 7th Semi-final 2: Denmark vs England: Smoked or Jellied? How do you like your eels?

Denmark and England have been at peace together for about the last 700 years, but have met on the football field in major competitions 17 times.

When football began to take centre stage, originally in England, Eel, Pie and Mash, with 'liquor'—the gravy the jellied eels were cooked in with lashings of parsley—was a popular food, particularly in London, but that's hard to find now, though you can find recipes for jellied eels online and buy pots in supermarkets.

On the other hand, Danes love their smørrebrød with smoked eel, scrambled eggs and plenty of chives.

However, if you're an England supporter and can't find jellied eels, or can't stand them, we do have an authentic, 17th century recipe for Eel Pie, from Mrs Cromwell's Cookbook.

But, jokes aside, what we really want is a great summer desert, so we have recipes for the classic Danish Rødgrød med fløde, courtesy of Birgitte Kampmann, a delicious summer fruit soup, to go up against the English classic Summer Pudding.

And to go with either of them, to celebrate our long friendship—and whoever wins—break open a bottle of your favourite bubbly!
